Fast Fact: The largest of the toucan family and native to South America, the toucan’s colorful and oversized bill (measuring 7.5 inches long) has made it one of the world’s most popular birds.  It is used to catch tasty morsels and pitch them to one another during a mating ritual fruit toss.  While its size may deter predators the bill is of little use in combat – consisting of a honeycomb of bone that contains a lot of air.  The bill does enable them to reach fruit on branches that are too small to support their weight and to skin their pickings.
